Bad things are happening in Gillian Sandler’s life. Just after her ninth birthday her parents announce that they are getting divorced. If that wasn’t enough, her dad is leaving for a younger woman named Amber whom he intends to marry. Even worse, Gilly, the star goalie for the school soccer team, knows three Ambers, all on the team and in her fourth-grade class. Embarrassed and furious, Gilly conspires to get rid of Amber, her future stepmother, and enlists the help of her older brother, Marcus. Whatever she tries seems to backfire, until one terrifying night, when she learns something important about Amber. Then there’s the Amber Club at school. If she can become a member, will they join the conspiracy?

New From Fran Orenstein

I want to share with you all a poem written by Dr. Fran Orenstein shortly after the tragedy as Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.  It is an amazing work that needs to be spread around the globe.

Unfinished Lives

Not an auspicious day

An ordinary winter Friday

A week before the ending

Or the new beginning of the world

Only two days after 12-12-12

A day of ascendance and movement

When meteors raced across the sky

And planets began their prophetic alignment

On this ordinary December day

The world shook in fear and rage

As twenty tiny stars winked out

And darkness fell on unrealized dreams

When hope crashed in a hail of bullets

Unspun dreidls, unopened Chanukah gifts

Hidden Christmas toys waiting in vain

A red bike buried in a box never to be ridden

The unbearable agony of drifting souls

Reaching out for Mommy’s arms

Their unfinished lives

Now only a fantasy
